SHORT QUESTIONS unit 5 grade 5 science

Unit      5
1 Define matter.
Ans Anything which occupies space and has mass is called matter.
2 How many states of matter are there?
Ans There are three states of matter are there i.e. solid, liquid, gas.
3 Define volume.
Ans The space occupied by a substance is called its volume.
4 Write properties of solids.
Ans Solids have fix shape . they occupy definite space.
5 Write properties of liquids.

Ans Liquids do not have any shape. They occupy definite space.
6 Write properties of gases.
Ans Gases do not have any shape and do not occupy definite space.e.g. air.
7 Name some solids that can be poured.
Ans Sugar, salt and flour are solids that can be poured.
8 What is matter made of?
Ans Matter is made of very small particles.
9 Define atom.
Ans An atom is the smallest particle of an element.
10 Define element
Ans Element is the simplest material made of one kinfof atoms.
11 Define molecule.
Ans A molecule is the smallest piece of a compound.
12 When a compound is formed?
Ans A compound is formed when two or more elements are combined to make a different kind of material.
13 Write any two characteristics of particles in a solid.
Ans They are packed very closely.
They are arranged in a fixed and regular pattern.
14 Why solids have definite shape?
Ans The particles in a solid are unable to move freely that’s why they have definite shape occupies definite space.
15 Why solids cannot be compressed?
Ans There is almost no space between the particles so that they cannot come any closer to one another. That’s why solids cannot be compressed.
16 Write any two characteristics of particles in liquid.
Ans They are not arranged in a fixed pattern.
They move over very small distances.
17 Write any two characteristics of particles in gas
.
Ans They are arranged in irregular way.
They move quickly in all directions.
18 Why gas particles can be compressed easily?
Ans The particles in a gas are far apart from one another so a gas can be compressed easily.
19 Why a gas has no definite shape?
Ans The  particles move to occupy any available space that’s why gas has no definite shape.
20 How the particles of solids , gases and liquid move?
Ans The particles of a solid only vibrate at fixed position.
The particles of a liquid move for short distances.
The particles of a gas move freely.
21 How the states of matter can be changed?
Ans Due to changes in the motion and arrangement of particles, there is a change in the state of matter.
22 Define melting.
Ans The change in the arrangement of particles is called melting point.
23 Who explained the properties of different states of matter?
Ans Robert Hooke  explained the properties of different states of matter.
24 Define freezing.
Ans The change of liquid into solid state is called freezing.
25 Define boiling.
Ans The process by which a liquid gets heat and changes to gas is called boiling.
26 What is meant by evaporation?
Ans The process by which a liquid changes into gas at a temperature which is below the temperature at which it boils.
27 What is the difference between evaporation and boiling?
Ans Evaporation occurs only on the surface of the liquid while boiling occurs in the whole liquid.
28 DEFINE CONDENSATION.
ANS The process by which a gas changes ito a liquid by the effect of cooling is called condensation.
29 Define water bodies?
Ans Water is found in ocean, rivers, canals, pounds and underground. All these places are called water bodies.
30 How many  tons of water evaporate from earth  with in one second?
Ans Within one second, about 16 million tons of water evaporate from the earth.
31 Define Transpiration.
Ans Water also evaporate from the surface of plants. This evaporation is called transpiration.
32 Differentiate between medium cloud and high cloud.
Ans Medium clouds are also made up of water droplets, but are 2,000-7,000 metres high.
High clouds are usually made up of ice crystals, are 5,500-14,000 metres high.
33 How dew is formed?
Ans Early in the morning and at night, water vapours condense to form droplets and come down on the Earth as dew.
34 What is the average speed of rain water fall?
Ans The average speed of rain water fall is just 8-10 km/hour.
35 Differentiate between fog and frost.
Ans During winter when the morning temperature is very low, drops of water freeze in the atmosphere as fog. In intense cold days, these water droplets fall down as frost.
