DEMOCRACY
Introduction:-
Democracy is the most popular form of government in the modern time. Another familiar name of democracy is;
“Government by consent.”
It is also said by arctic;
“Democracy is form of Mobocracy---a government by crowds.”
In reality in the Greek language the literal meaning of Democracy is also Mobocracy b/c in Greek Demos means “Crowd” and Cracy is from the word “Kralia or Cratos” which means power. Thus
Democracy will definitely become mobocracy if it is in disciplined.
A famous critic Abraham Lincoln said that;
Government of the people by the people and for the people.

In simple words it may be any scheme of government in which people are allowed to take part as a matter of right.
In democracy the citizens are given the freedom to voice their grievances and their wishes at the time of elections.
Merits;-
1.      First it works for the betterment of the common man.
2.      Second it is based on equality. Every citizen thought to be equal to law.
3.      Third , it allows the people the right to change the govt. through vote.
4.      Fourth , it give birth to a stable government b/c it reduces the danger of revolt.
5.      Fifth, in the democracy more importance is given to the education of man.
6.      Lastly, it gives the people the sense of self-help and responsibility.
Later on also time to time people can express themselves on different issues faced by government and the people. But it does not mean that they should create lawlessness in the country.
Demerits;-
1.      First it gives birth to party-politics which destroys the liberty and individuality of the people.
2.      Second, it is very expensive form of government.
3.      Third, moral values are ignored in democracy. Everything is good and fair for winning the elections.
4.      Fourth, bribery and corruption are the common abuses of democracy.
5.      Fifth, it is an irresponsible and in efficient form of government. The elected people are usually ignorant of their responsibilities.
Islamic concepts of democracy;-
Islamic concept of democracy is different from the modern concept of democracy.
1.      In Islam authority lies in ALLAH and not in the people.
2.      The government is there not to please the people but to enforce the order of ALLAH.
3.      There is no party-politics in Islamic democracy.
4.      Quality should give more importance than quantity in the election or selection of representatives.
Conclusion;-
·         Modern democracy can be improved if we run it on the lines given by Islam. Then it can bring real peace and justice in the World. It is then that we may call it the best form of government.
·         If in the democracy discipline is lacking it is sure to be doomed. If we see that democracy has only become successful in those countries only where people follow the path of discipline.
·         In Pakistan also we have adopted a democratic type of government.

·         Let us imbibe the spirit of discipline like Switzerland and make democracy a success in our country. In this way we can also make our nation strong and prosperous.
