Essay writing

Essay writing has become a general prescription to gauge the students command over grammar and language. There is no examination today which does not set a question on essay writing.
Moreover the question on essay writing comprises 20 per cent weightage of marks. So the students need to practice diligently to tackle any topic on essays.
Prose, poetry or drama is prescribed as texts and students are
taught in the class-rooms carefully and they do not find any hardship in answering any question set in the examination. Essay writing, on the other hand, left to self-study and the student who practices sincerely and regularly stands up to the mark. No student, however intelligent can write at random on any topic if he or she has no idea about it. It is necessary that before starting to write an essay, one should ascertain the class of the topic, whether it is descriptive, narrative, imaginative, reflexive, expository or argumentative. Next, one should recognize the slant in the topic. It is different to write an essay on “A Train Journey” than to write on “A Train Journey in an unreserved compartment.” While in the former, one is at liberty to write anything as one feels about a train journey, in the latter topic one should concentrate on the slant and write all that concerns an unreserved compartment.
In this book about three hundred and thirty three essays have been given. Every topic has its importance from the examination point of view. The essays are patterned in such a way that while they are complete as a whole, yet a diligent reader can develop these essays according to his or her fancy.
In the preparation of this book, the author has been guided by the following considerations:
1.      That the language should be simple, idiomatic, clear and straightforward.
2.      That the presentation of ideas should be easy and within easy comprehension of the students concerned.
3.      That the essays selected must cover a large number of topics so that with suitable adjustments one essay could be used under various headings.

4.      That the presentation of essays should be methodical and help students to cultivate the habit of forming their own ideas with the help of those given in the essasys.

  2. This part I particularly like, "That the presentation of essays should be methodical and help students to cultivate the habit of forming their own ideas with the help of those given in the essasys." Although I would like to advise the writer to follow the ideas that he or she presented in terms of proofreading for grammar and spelling mistakes. - Layce of essay writing.
