VILLAGE HEADMAN
There
is a head man in every village. He is an important government servant. He is
respected by everybody. He meets all officers who visit his village. He tells
them all about the latest happenings over there. He collects land-revenue and
deposits it in the government treasury. He helps the police in their
investigations, if there is a serious quarrel, a murder, an accident, or a
dacoit. He is a rich landlord, but he leads a very simple life. He is a good
friend but a bad enemy.
